Paleontology, Archaeology and History
The Historisches Centrum Hagen is located in a former chain-factory that has been completely restored in 1998. The main office of the Historisches Centrum Hagen combines facilities for different ways of cultural life right in the middle of the city district Eilpe, a part of Hagen with a notable history. In Eilpe the Museum of the City presents the history of the town and its region. The well-known Museum of Palaeontology and Archaeology is located in the 13th century castle of Werdringen in the city district Vorhalle.

Hagen is the 37th largest city in Germany, located in the federal state of North Rhine Westphalia. It is located on the south-eastern edge of the Ruhr area, about 15 km south of Dortmund. Hagen is called "Gate to the Sauerland", the Montains region south of the Ruhr. This region is one of the historical areas for fossils and archaeology in Germany. North Rhine Westphalia contains the largest number of museums in Europe.

Furthermore, the Historisches Centrum Hagen is involved in cooperations with several institutions, organisations and museums in Germany and in other countries world-wide.
The Historisches Centrum Hagen is a place for research and presentation of history with a supraregional reputation. It serves as a well known address for researches on History, Archaeology and Palaeontology and cultural life in South-Westphalia and the Ruhr-Area.

In Hagen the oldest remnants of modern humans in the Ruhr area and in Westphalia were found in the deep cave Blätterhöhle. The people lived in the Hagen area near the end of the last ice age, in the early Mesolithic around 10,700 years ago. The remnants are to be seen in the Museum for Archaeology.

The Historisches Centrum Hagen hosted the mirror server and supports the German section of Virtual Library museums pages: the eldest and world-largest catalogue of online museums and museological resources.
The Virtual Library Contemporary History is the one of the main resources on historical research to this topic, similar to the Virtual Library Early Modern History.
The webserver of the Historical Center is contacted by about 55.000 visitors from more than 100 countries per month who gain access to more than 350.000 pages of information. Several international web-portals of cooperation partners can be used to start searches on the internet.
Finally a number of scientific information-lists are hosted on the Centre´s mailserver. For example the mailing lists "NS-Zwangsarbeit" and "Geschichtskultur Ruhr" are part of this server.
